2019 Race Camp

GRSA Race Camp is a new initiative for 2019! We have designed the course, per requests, to offer an option to learn to race. Camp will consist of four Wednesday evenings throughout July ( July 10,17, 24, and 31). It will be offered to sailors aged 8-16. It will run after our normal junior sailing camp, from 5:00-7:30pm. Cost is $160 for all four Wednesday’s. Each week skills will build off of the previous week and will culminate in a regatta the last week.

There is a perquisite of basic sailing concepts. The application includes two short answer questions to see if this a good fit for your child. By the end of our four sessions, students will be proficient in the basics of racing sailboats which includes starting, different race courses, tactics, more in depth boat handling, and rules of racing.

Dinner will be offered at 5pm with a short lesson and then on the water practice. Dinner is included in the price of the course. Requirements for this program will be the same as sail camp in terms of swimming, PFD’s, and other needed items. Please read over the Course handbook and complete the two forms. *Bring completed forms to camp on the first Wednesday!

For questions about registration or the camp, contact Kate Gomes, sailcamp@grsa.org.  Check out our FAQ's below.

*This registration is not through Chesterfield County, it will direct you to a registration form through GRSA

1. Can my child stay till race camp if they are in sail camp that week?

Unfortunately we can not provide babysitting services as our staff needs a break between camps. Children will still need to be picked up at 4pm and returned for the start of race camp at 5pm.

2. Why do I have to answer questions to register?

We want to ensure that your child is truly interested in racing and has a basic understanding of sailing.

3. What will be provided for dinner?

We plan on picking up pizzas with a heathy side, such as a fruit or veggies each week.

4. What will they learn in this program?

They will get the fundamentals of racing a sailboat. We will run a regatta, a sailing race, on the last Wednesday evening.

5. What if we have to miss one Wednesday?

At this time the price is for all four Wednesday’s. We will not be able to provide a discount if a Wednesday is missed.

6. What boats will be used?

Children 8-11 will be in our Optis with older children being in our 420s.
