New Year's Day 2006 on Swift Creek Reservoir
New Years day at the Club
attracted approximately 50 members to the unofficial, unsanctioned,
informal, traditional New Years day Social and sail. The weather was
in the 50's with a little wind; The roaring fire and occasional
sunshine offered plenty of comfort however. There was no shortage of
great food provided by the participants and John & Melissa Swenson's oyster
chowder was very tasty as always.
First-boat-in-the-water
honors for 2006 (same as last year) go to Bill & Ruth McClintock who launched their Flying
Scot, Half Yankee early in the day. Due to the stillness and
the temperature, she was joined only by a couple of kayaks. The
conditions made some beautiful pictures possible!
The New Years sailing (boat
in the water) tradition has now occurred approximately 16 consecutive years
since the idea was conceived at a New Year's eve party at Bob
Atherton's house when someone suggested we "go sailing tomorrow" ..
(alcohol related). There were a
couple years when we had to break some ice to get a boat in the lake. Once,
we had no choice other than to slide the Club jon boat on the ice which was
too thick to break. We determined that this qualified as a "boat on the
water" that year.
