2017 Sail Camps

The Greater Richmond Sailing Association holds week-long sail camps from June through August for beginner and intermediate/advanced students.  All sessions are taught by U.S. Sailing certified instructors, and will be held at the club facilities at 4301 Wooldridge Road on Swift Creek Reservoir in Midlothian (find directions here).  Classes are Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Camps are open to students from 8 to 17.  Cost is $350 per week-long session.  Registration is open to all, regardless of county of residence.  The programs support self-confidence, sportsmanship, safety awareness and respect for others.

Important: All participants will be required to complete a swim test of approximately 50 yards.  While on the water, all students must wear a well-fitted Coast Guard approve Type III personal flotation device (PFD).  Transportation to and from the club and lunch are not provided. This camp qualifies as a Chesterfield County and Richmond City high school P.E. activity (please see your school's guidance counselor for more information).

Level I Sail Camp – No experience required!  Make new friends, spend the week on the lake, and learn how to sail.  Sailors will learn how to rig sailboats, parts of a sailboat, sail trim, safety, how to read the wind, and steering.  8-12 year olds will have the opportunity to be the captain of their own boat while sailing Optimist dinghies, while 13-17 year old will be paired up to jointly operate our Collegiate 420 sailboats. You can earn high school PE credits in Chesterfield County for this course (please see your school's guidance counselor for more information).

8-12 year olds:

13-17 year olds: 

Level II Sail Camp - Build on your experiences from Level I Camp!  Learn intermediate/advanced sailing techniques, and experiment with the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math components of sailing.  In the 8-12 year old class, students will continue to expand their knowledge on sailing Opti’s and learn more advanced sailing techniques. They will also experience a long distance sail across Swift Creek Reservoir. In the 13-17 year old class students will be introduced to flying a spinnakers and the basic of racing. This class will still utilize our Collegiate 420’s. You can earn high school PE credits in Chesterfield County for this course (please see your school's guidance counselor for more information).

8-12 year olds:

13-17 year olds: 

Level III Sail Camp- NEW this year! Only offered for 13-17 year olds-must have completed at least 2 GRSA Sail Camps within the last 3 years. This class will take all the fundamentals learned over Level I and Level II and put them to work learning the ropes of sailing a Flying Scot. Students will be moved from our Collegiate 420’s which are 13’9’’ into the larger Flying Scot, 19’! This class will challenge the adventurer in all of our students by exploring a larger boat and learning more race tactics! You can earn high school PE credits in Chesterfield County for this course (please see your school's guidance counselor for more information).

Cancellation Policy:We require two weeks notice for cancellations for a full refund. Any cancellations made within two weeks of the selected course will not be issued a refund.
